Ulrich and Sabine: Coffee Cultivation in the Heart of Nicaragua
For Ulrich and Sabine, growing coffee is more than just cultivating beans; it's a passion based on trust, sustainability, and respect for the environment. With nearly 20 years of experience managing coffee plantations in Nicaragua, they have perfected the art of producing high-quality specialty coffees in harmony with nature. "Agriculture is full of surprises," says Ulrich. "Every day brings a new challenge."
Their farm is located in the mountainous north of Nicaragua, in a protected national park. Only 15% of their land is used for coffee cultivation; the rest is untouched cloud forest. This balance allows Ulrich and Sabine to preserve an unspoiled natural environment. "We experience nature in its original form," says Sabine. Ulrich and Sabine rely on sustainable farming methods such as agroforestry and integrated organic farming, which they have refined over the years. "We believe in the benefits of permaculture," they say. "For example, we use marigold flowers to control nematodes and beneficial fungi to combat pests." These environmentally friendly practices not only ensure the productivity of their farm but also the quality of the coffee they produce.
The work fulfills them, but it is also complex and demanding. As Ulrich humorously remarks: "When growing coffee, you are not only a farmer, but also a beekeeper, biologist, mechanic, electrician, idealist, and even a yogi – for your nerves!" Despite these diverse tasks, they enjoy their work and often welcome visitors who experience the journey from bean to cup firsthand. "We love to show our guests that every coffee bean involves immense effort and therefore has great value," says Sabine.
Since 2010, Andraschko has been sourcing beans from Ulrich and Sabine, which has grown into a business partnership and friendship. "Elisabeth and Willy are not only great partners but also dear friends," says Ulrich. Mutual respect, appreciation of nature, and a shared commitment to quality are present in every cup of Andraschko coffee.
