The Heart of Specialty Coffee: A Look at Fazenda Rainha
Fazenda Rainha is a significant coffee plantation located in the picturesque Vale de Grama, a volcanic valley on the border between São Paulo and Minas Gerais in Brazil. 280 hectares of fertile land, geographic advantages, and a temperate climate provide ideal conditions for cultivating high-quality coffee beans.
Every year in October, the harvest begins. The coffee beans are hand-picked to ensure their full flavor potential. The coffee cherries are processed naturally and then sun-dried on the farm. Once the optimal moisture content of 11% is reached, they are transferred to wooden silos.
Around 50 farmers live on Fazenda Rainha, a community that shares a love for coffee and for the land they cultivate. Year-round employees receive housing, healthcare, and education. A school building and a chapel designed by the renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer are also located on the premises.
Farmer Alex Sandro Suzano's life is characterized by "the chirping of birds, the scent of fresh plants, and freedom." He spends his days conducting coffee tastings and discussing agricultural concepts with colleagues – surrounded by nature. "Every day, I learn to grow beyond myself and initiate innovations," he says.
Climate change poses an ever-increasing challenge. Fazenda Rainha responds with ecological and regenerative agriculture. The farm works with local universities and agricultural experts to introduce innovations and refine its methods to maintain its high standards. It relies on cultivation with fewer pesticides and plants cover crops that protect the soil. Fazenda Rainha also maintains the natural springs that enable environmentally conscious irrigation. Fazenda Rainha has been a finalist in the prestigious Cup of Excellence multiple times, a well-deserved recognition of its efforts.
