Chemex Brewing Guide
characteristics of the beans to stand out without overpowering bitterness or
excessive strength.
#1 Flushing
Begin by placing the filter in the Chemex and rinsing it with warm water. This helps neutralize any paper taste and brings the Chemex to the proper temperature, making it easier to handle.
#2 Grinding
Grind the coffee to a medium-coarse consistency. The recommended ratio is 60 grams of coffee to 1 liter of water for a balanced extraction.
#3 Blooming
Place the Chemex on a scale and zero it out. Start your timer as you begin brewing. For the first pour, evenly saturate the coffee grounds by pouring water in slow, circular motions, ensuring no dry spots remain.
Use approximately one-third of the total water volume. Allow the coffee to bloom for 45 seconds, during which gasses are released, causing bubbles to form on the surface.
#4 Second Pouring
After the 45-second bloom, slowly pour in the second third of the water, maintaining a circular pouring motion. Wait for the water to pass through the coffee bed, allowing for even extraction.
#5 Extracting
In the third and final phase, pour the remaining water using the same circular motion. The full extraction process should take between 3 to 4 minutes from start to finish, resulting in a clean, flavorful cup of coffee.
#6 Enjoying
Sip, enjoy, repeat until you have mastered your filter brew.
